This 1900s Victorian necklace descends from the Victorian Albert chain, originally a men's pocket watch chain named for Prince Albert, who popularized the T-bar-and-fastener design so widely from the 1860s that it became a Victorian menswear staple. After pocket watches declined in favor of wristwatches in the early 20th century, and especially after World War I when soldiers left their chains behind with wives who began wearing them as necklaces, the T-bar fob chain transitioned from a masculine watch accessory into fashionable jewelry for women.

The unusual pierced star pattern seen across the fancy links is a recognized Victorian fancy link style, sometimes called a "star link" or "pierced star link" chain, prized today for its intricate, lace-like open-worked detail that required more skilled hand-finishing than simpler curb or belcher links. This double-strand design pairs the ornate star-pierced sections with faceted belcher links, combining two distinct Victorian techniques in one chain, which adds to its rarity and visual richness compared to a single-style chain.

The T-bar terminal, the design's namesake feature, was originally meant to slide through a waistcoat buttonhole to anchor a gentleman's watch chain securely, but here it functions purely decoratively as the necklace's centerpiece pendant. At 9.7mm wide and 48cm long, cast in the warm rose-toned gold characteristic of the period, the necklace has enough substance and drape to be worn as a striking statement piece rather than a delicate everyday chain.
